Belgian Aviation Militaire

 Aviation Militaire WW2

The Belgian Air Component was small but had a good training system so a number of pilots were well qualified but most the the air component was mostly destroyed on the ground in the opening day of the war.

On the early morning of May 10, the alarm was sounded, and the pilots at Schaffen Air Base went to their planes, thinking it was an exercise. A few minutes later, 50 unidentified aircraft flew over the airfield. Despite his orders, Captaine Max Guisgand, the commander of 1/1/2 Gladiators flew his planes into the air at 0420 hrs while the Hurricanes started their engines. 12 minutes later, three Heinkel 111s were spotted, not troubled by AA fire. The planes in the air were not there when the 111s came, and the 111s strafed the airfield several times. The planes tried to take off through the explosions and fires. A bullet punctured the main wheel of Lt. Wilmonts Gladiator and he rammed a Hurricane. Minutes later 110s and Dornier Do 17 strafed and bombed the airfield. Four Hurricanes were set on fire, and 6 others were damaged. The roof of the hangar fell in and the planes in it were destroyed. Sgt. Libert was burned badly when the fuel tank of his Hurricane exploded. Captaine Van den Hove d'Ertsenrijick and Caparol Jacobs managed to escape from Schaffen. They encountered some bombers but didn't manage to shoot down any, even though helped by Gladiator pilot Sgt. Van den Broecke. The third section of Gladiators from 1/1/2 almost collided with the three 111s and had to break away.

The second section (Cpt. Gerard (G-27), Sgt. Henri Winand (G-32) and Sgt. Henri Clinquart (G-34) spotted a formation of enemy bombers and broke it up. During the bombing, other gladiators left Schaffen for Beauvechain. Hurricane pilots Siroux, Lelarge and a lt.) flew three of them. Other reported engagements were when at 0900 10 109s ran in to two Gladiators over Tirlemont. Both were shot down and one pilot bailed out. At 1000 hrs, three Gladiators were shot down by 1/JG27 while trying to intercept escorted Ju87s.

A few missions were completed by the Belgians bombing three bridges on the Albert Canal on the of 11th May. The bombing was done by Fairey Battles of the 5/III/3Aé, the fighter escort was provided by 1/I/2Aé Gloster Gladiators. On the 11th May out of fifteen Battles that attacked pontoons bridge across the Maastricht, Veldwezelt, Vroenhoven and Briegden, only five aircraft survived.

The 9th and 11th squadron flying R31s still had aircraft in the sky when the surrender was announced on the 28th.

Belgian Chasseur Ardennais support Battalion

Belgian Chasseur Ardennais support Battalion

Each Regiment of the Belgian Army has four regiments, 3 rifle and one support battalion. It consisted of MG, mortar, infantry gun and antitank companies. Interesting the T13 and T15 light tanks were regarded as self propelled Anti tank vehicles.

The Belgians had a wide mix of light and medium machine guns. The light squad weapons were the BAR 30 model, Lewis, and the Hotchiss M1909, Chauchat M1915.

Bar machine gun

BAR lmg

Light Mortars were the  and the DBT 50mm, one in each company, in rapid fire one in the HQ company

The medium machine gun included the Vickers, Maxim 08, Maxim 1911,  Colt 1914, FM 1914 and the Hotchiss 1914.

Anti tank was the superb Fonderie Royale de Canons Modèle 1931 47mm

A interesting development of this gun, it used the same carriage and trail as the 76 FRC canon. The Chassuer Ardennais carried two barrels on their vehicle the 47mm anti tank and the 76mm IG on the Vickers carrier or Alvis Straussler Hefty so they could be swapped out as required.

Bofors mountain gun, cannon 76mm model 34 infantry support gun.

Planning Additional infantry for my Chasseur Ardennais, I have a mix again of FAA, EWM, and battlefield/Blitz miniatures to complete over the next 6 weeks.

The Belgian Chasseurs Ardennais were organised into Regiments of HQ plus three rifle battalions and one support battalion. Each rifle battalion had a HQ and three rifle companies. The support battalion had a HQ and three companies, these support companies were penny packed out to support each battalion.

The Organisation below is for the rifle companies.

Notes: The MP34 Schmeisser-Bergmann-Bayard machine pistol a rare beast normally carried by NCOs and officers in reconnaissance companies but I have seen it in use by the Chasseurs Ardennais. The BAR browning was the predominant Sqaud automatic weapon, but I have also seen photos of the Modele 1915/27 French Chauchat and The Lewis  light machine gun also.

Chasseur Ardennais - FN 63 Trucks

Chasseur Ardennais - FN 63 Trucks

Additional pieces for my chasseur Ardennais. Completed three Early War Miniatures  FN 63 4RM trucks, really nice pieces, I am planning these to tow my 150mm Schneider gun battery, I need to add seated crew to one along with a towed gun.

I have added SHQ drivers in two of them. I elected to darken the British scc2 green to more reflect to Belgian vehicle Colour.

This vehicle will be the tow, I have set the rear lower and plan to add crew and artillery men in the rear.

Les Chasseurs Ardennais a Bodange - book review

Les Chasseurs Ardennais a Bodange, book review

I seen a reference to this book in a French magazine and I knew I had to have it. Written by the commanding officer of the 5th company of the 1st Chassuer Ardennais who defended Bodange.

The book had some great colour and black and white photos, maps and a comprehensive breakdown of the units involved and weapons in each platoon. Maps of each position allow you to follow the combat until the end phase in Bondage.

I plan to walk the ground this year on our holiday in Belgium, and take a number of photos. I wrote a scenario a number of years ago for the battle, after reading the accounts I will rewrite them and post up the skirmish level and a company level scenarios.

Belgian Gloster Gladiator WIP part 1

A recent pickup from a French bring and buy was a Gloster Gladiator which I will use for my Belgians I think. The old airfix kit will need not a lot of work to bring it up to spec.

These are the markings I will use I think

I plan to paint Flight Sergeant Robin. While escorting a formation of nine Belgian Fairey Battles to bomb the bridges over the Albert Canal, Rolin (in G-22) managed to shoot down a Luftwaffe BF109 at Zichen before faling victim himself to enemy fire at Heukelom (Vroenhoven). Fortunately he jumped to safety but was captured.

Pilot 1 Sgt Denys Rolin poses in front of his Gloster Gladiator I G-22. On 11 May 1940,

G-22 entered service in June 1937, shot down on the 11th of May, 1940. G5-x, G-21, 1/I/2Aé (Comet), Gladiator Aerobatic Team, shot down over Heukelom by Luftwaffe BF.109 of I/JG1.

Chasseur Ardennais Alvis-Straussler Hefty Part Three

 Belgian Alvis-Straussler Hefty truck

While I was researching my Belgians, I came across a reference to the Alvis designed hefty artillery tow truck, finding info on this beast is quite difficult as it seems a number of models were produced and all called "hefty". It was termed the Tracteur Léger d’artillerie Alivis-Straussler Hefty 4x4.

The most common image is the trial version, but I believe the Chasseur Ardennes actually purchased the fifty vehicles of the C model. I could find little or no record of how many were built of each type, it seems several different were in production at the same time, all seemed to have the pivot in the chassis though. It is believed at least 11 were used I have only seen one photo of it in use though in a Belgian artillery book I purchased from the Belgian Artillery Museum.

I know I started this beast almost 5 years ago but it is now complete and awaiting paint!

WIP 1 from 5 Years ago

WIP 2

Finally Completed this year quite happy with it. Now to the paint shop!

This year I want to complete a lot of my parked projects and get back to completing my 20mm early ww2 kit and armies.

The Belgians ordered fifty of these primarily for towing artillery and AT guns for the Chasseur Ardennais as far as I can research only thirty five were delivered before the war commenced.

Alvis-Straussler Hefty gun tractor in Belgium

The C model Alvis Hefty, was conceived by Nicolas Straussler and presented to London Commercial Motor Show in 1935. It was powered by the Ford 3.6L V8 65 hp engine, weighing 2.2 T empty and was articulated and pivoted in the middle to make it possible to cross uneven ground.

ACG1
I want to build the ACG1 although in RF this is only two models. Most of my force is built around the southern component of the front. A short history for you to whet the appetite...

The 10 Belgian ACG1 (AMC 35, 9 with the altered belgian turret) were formed into two platoons for the invasion and was attached to the Corps de Cavalerie T13 2nd Division. The unit initially were based in Brussels but in the first week were moved to defend the bridges between Willebroek and Vilvoorde. The Squadron was commanded by Kapitein R.Hullebroeck , and divided into two platoons of 4 tanks with two in reserve.
The Berliet VUBD Armoured car only had 10 delivered and they were used by the Gendarmerie, they were thought to have seen limited action.
