370th Fighter Group P38 part 1 WIP Wednesday

P38J Droop Snoot

First ww2 aircraft build off the desk this year is a P-38J from the 401st reconnaissance squadron of the  370th fighter group USAAF.  I have always wanted to build one of these for my European theatre ground air support as this unit was the close support for Pattons 3rd Armys breakout through Pays de Loire in August 1944. The droop snoot nosed aircraft was used coordination for targeting and low level rockets and bombing by the rest of the group, targeting the German support elememts and retreating convoys to the north and east into the Falaise pocket.

401st Squadron patch

As Wargamers we like to think that air support was easily available, with ground to air contact regularly. Pattons 3rd army was the first time that units at the front had direct radio liaison between the ground and the target liaison aircraft during the breakout. US aircraft were available every 8 mins to be targeted on the Germans units directed by these aircraft in constant contact with the lead elements of Pattons Armoured units. The P38s were flying out of Cardonville in Normandy so were over targets in the Mayenne region in around 5 mins as they chased the German 7th army east towards Paris then the border. The unit was also the first to drop Napalm incendiary bombs in Normandy on the 17th of July on a German fuel depot at Coutances west of St Lo.

My kit is the superb Dragon model, only complaint no pilot….. so a Revell one was used, markings are for the 401st squadron of the 370th Fighter Group, fuselage code 9D.

The kit being academy went together very well, you will need a stand to align the wings though because of the centerpiece and the way the wings are designed. I built it wheels up, which has a lot of carving and sanding to get close enough to closed wheel bays. Also ensure you correctly line up the pilots bay with top and bottom before gluing. The only PE I used was for the recon camera.

708th Infantry Division in Pays de Loire August 1944

708th Division History

The 708th Infantry Division was created in February 1941 in the region of Metz and Strasbourg. Transferred to south west France as a static division in June manning on the coastal defences in the Gironde region. The 728 battalion was in the Gironde estuary at Royan, the 748th at Lesparre in Médoc. The 360th is stationed at Soulac, Lesparre (Saint-Vivian)and at the Caserne Nansouty in Bordeaux. Both artillery battalions are in positions along the Gironde river (1). For the muster to depart for Pays de Loire the 13th of July the Division numbered 8123 men.(2)

The 708th division was split up on the 2nd of July with part of the division to remain defending the positions along the coast and the remainder to be sent North to Pay’s de Loire to defend a new blocking line. The 360th regiment remained in the Festung Gironde Nord position along with the two fortress gun regiments 1280 (Blonville-sue-mer) and 1282 (Royan), KVGR (Gironde Harbour defence) the 708 field replacement battalion and RAD elements under the command of Generalmajor Arndt.

A new structure was formed on the 13th of July (3) and the 708th field Division was appointed its former commander generalleutnant Herman Wilck. At this time the division also received nine self propelled Marder 1 sdkfz 135 Panzerjager and twelve 88mm Anti tank guns from 2/AOK1 reserves. The division commenced movement on the 2nd of August by train and vehicles via Angers, then North to join the blocking line and deployed in a triangle defensive position, from Domfront (Normandy ) along the Mayenne river through Ambrieres, Ville Mayenne to Laval to the south and then. following the national highway to Le Mans (German 7th Army HQ), then back via Sillé-le-Guillaume back to Mayenne.

Most of the division was in place by the 5th, however the American 90th Infantry Division had already captured the important remaining river bridge across the Mayenne river at Ville Mayenne on the afternoon of the 5th of August and then formed a bridgehead driving deep towards Le Mans.

The 708th divisions 1st and 3rd battalions of 728th Regiment joined the counterattack on the Mayenne river breach flanks from the direction East from Aaron and Pre-en-Pail from the N12 north of Mayenne. The Kampfgruppe Coretti assaulted the north east of the city and was commanded by Oberst Julius Coretti (appointed by 7th Army HQ). Counter attacks persisted over the 6th and 7th of August. The Kampfgruppe consisted of the reconnaissance battalion Panzer Lehr, III Kp (6 x sturmgeshütz  III) of Sturmgeschützbrigade 341, 1st Sicherungs Regiment, flak battalion 496 (most of the battery were lost in the fighting in Mayenne), a Radfahr battalion (30?), Luftwaffe Landschutzen Lisieux (elements from the radar station at Oisseau), plus another Kampfgruppe Reich from 9th Panzer Division on the 7th and 8th of August. Over the next three days fierce night and street fighting between Aaron and Mayenne erupted which almost destroyed Kampfgruppe Coretti with the remainder retreating towards Sille Le Guilliame, Pre-en-Pail and Evron on the 9th August.

Thirty Kilometers south Between the 5th and 6th of August heavy fighting occurred around Laval, a second breach and crossing of the river occurred south at Laval by 5th US Armoured, 105th Cavalry and 79th Infantry Division. Kampfgruppe Oberst Kutzen defending Laval and the Laval lufwaffe airfield (elements 91st Infantry Division, 17th SS Panzerjager Abteilung, 708 Fusilier battalion, 842 Flak battalion and Sicherungs Regiment 195) many were caught in a pincer movement and surrounded (1667 prisoners) with escaping units retreating towards Le Mans on the route National.

The division reorganised and prepared a new blocking line as elements of the 9th Panzer arrived to help defend Le Mans, again being savaged at Evron and Saint Suzanne (where majority of the artillery regiment was destroyed or captured) retreating through Sillé-le-Guillaume north towards Alençon, hasty kampfgruppes were thrown together to prevent the the breakthrough, however against overwhelming odds the front had collapsed by the 9th. On the 10th generalleutnant Herman Wilck was wounded when his car was destroyed by artillery fire and command fell to Oberst Bruno Gerlock and by the 18th much of the division was surrounded and surrendered (Gerlock was captured on the 19th)(5) . The remainder of the Divisions men either escaped into the Falaise pocket and moved west via Chartres with the retreating German VIIth army.

708th Infantry Division Commanders

The division's former commander, Generalmajor Arndt with his aides Hauptmann Wilhelm Schöps and Oberleutnant Arthur Jordan were captured on the 24th of August and executed by Free French Forces south of Troyes on 27th August at Chateau de Grogny, there bodies have never been found.

Commanded by lt General Herman Wilck a WW1 veteran, he commanded the highly decorated Kaiser Franz Garde Grenadier 2nd Battalion where he was awarded the Iron Cross first, second class and the Pour le Merite. He was wounded in his vehicle by artillery on the 10th of August and replaced by Oberst Bruno Gerloch.

Allied Fighter Aircraft over Normandy III P51B-5

Allied aircraft build III.

Currently adding more aircraft to the allied air support of operation Cobra and the breakout east through Mayenne to Le Mans, then the push north to close the Falaise pocket. So research first for squadrons etc who flew in the area in support of the US troops, plus those who bombed and strafed the retreating germans through the pocket area.

I build all of my kits in the wheels up mode, and add a hole in the bottom for my plane bracket to fit into. I also like to add pilots, as most kits do not supply these I need to hunt around my friends who build static kits or buy resin and metal pilots.

Third build is a mister craft 1/72 P51B-5 Mustang often referred to as the MKIII by the RAF and RCAF. It is quite a basic kit went together very well with very little clean up, I managed to remember to paint the interior, but have not attached the transfers for the instrument panel, will add this later before I place the pilot in. (I am thinking about second Mustang of these but a P51D model!)

Options I am thinking for my aircraft

122 squadron RAF
flew Mk III until 1945

65 Squadron RAF (withdrawn in September to refit to MkIV or P-51D models)

315 squadron RAF (polish )

316 squadron RAF (Polish)

Allied Fighter Aircraft II - P-47D over Normandy 1944 Build II

Allied Fighter aircraft II - P-47 over Normandy 1944 build II

I want to build specific aircraft to the allied and axis air support of operation Cobra and the breakout east through Mayenne to Le Mans then the push north to close the Falaise pocket. So research first for squadrons etc who flew in the area in support of the US troops, English, Canadian and Polish troops plus those who bombed and strafed the retreating germans through the pocket area.

I build all of my kits in the wheels up mode, and add a hole in the bottom for my plane bracket to fit into, this then mounts on my WWI/SCW canvas eagles telescopic stands. On the new table I am thinking about a mount that plugs into the edge of the permanent table and can swivel and be set at different heights. I also like to add pilots, as most kits do not supply these I need to hunt around my friends who build static kits or buy resin or even metal pilots.

Up for my second build is an 1/72nd Academy P-47D. A little longer build on this one, a beautiful kit with very little clean up though. This time I did not forget to paint the interior, before assembly. I will place the pilot in when I paint him, in the next few days, then I paint the rest of the plane.

Painting to come when some paints arrive from MIG, as I am trying the new real colours on my allied aircraft to see how it performs.

Allied Fighter Aircraft- Hawker Typhoon over Normandy 1944 build I

Allied Fighter Aircraft-Hawker Typhoon over Normandy 1944  build I.

During the shutdown I have been beavering away painting medievals on my painting desk, but on my build desk I have been building 1/72 kits. Last week I ventured up to the third floor and decided to get out my box of shame, predominantly armour kits, but quite a few aircraft.

I want to add specific aircraft to the allied and axis air support of operation Cobra and the breakout east through Mayenne to Le Mans then the push north to close the Falaise pocket. So research first for squadrons etc who flew in the area in support of the US troops, plus those who bombed and strafed the retreating germans through the pocket area.

I build all of my kits in the wheels up mode, and add a hole in the bottom for my plane bracket to fit into, this bracket id for my Canvas eagles WW1 and SCW air collections. With the construction of the new table I am building brackets on the table, that swivel over the table. I also like to add pilots, as most kits do not supply these I need to hunt around my friends who build static kits or buy resin and metal pilots.

First up a quick build Hobby boss Hawker Typhoon Mk.IB,  as RAF or RAAF support. I think had it built in possibly an hour, with very little clean up, I did forget to paint the interior, but will do this later before I place the pilot in. The pilot is on the painting desk behind some other 100 years war figures .

Painting to come when some paints arrive from MIG, as I am trying the new real colours on my allied aircraft.

Options I am considering

1944 Sicherung Regiments in Normandy, Brittany & Pays de Loire

I have been researching the 325th Sicherung Division, more commonly referred as the Brehmer division. Commanded by General Walter Brehmer (involved in the plot to kill Hitler) the divsion then becomes part of the 1st Army group under Generalleutenant Hans Freiherr von Boineburg-Lengsfeld. The division was the only Police Security division in the west.

325th Sicherung Division

  • Division headquarters Paris
  • 1st Sicherungs Regiment
  • 5th Sicherungs Regiment (Bordeaux)
  • 6th Sicherungs regiment
  • 190th Sicherungs Regiment
  • 325th Artillery Regiment
  • 325th Fusilier company
  • 325th pak abteilung
  • 325th Pionier abteilung
  • 325th Nachricten  Abteilung
  • 325th motor transport
Units were rushed to the frontline in August 1944 from Paris to plug gaps after the breakout  of the 7th and 15th corps through Brittany and upper Pays de Loire (Pattons breakout). These police divisions were essentially for Paris and regional security, maintaining the peace and essentially rounding up French resistance, deportees, escaped prisoners, awol soldiers and downed Allied airmen.

German police bus destroyed near Le Mans

They were armed with a mixture of equipment, French trucks, cars and buses and armoured cars, Czechoslovakian MG26(t) and mixed french and Czech rifles, mortars, russian and german AT  guns.

13th heavy company were armed with twelve Pak36  3.7cm AT guns motorised with military Skoda trucks requisitioned in Paris.
The 14th company were armed with twelve Panard armoured cars sdkfz 178 armed with 25mm canon.

The first and second battalions seemed to of kept their Paris Buses for transport, the third battalion were then on their bicycles.

The HQ was posted to Coulans-sur-Gee, Sarthe, Pays de Loire, on the main east/west road from Laval to Le Mans, with orders to hold the line between Loue, Saint Suzanne, Evron to Aaron (east of the Mayenne river). The  1st and 2nd  battalions seemed to have been split up into company groups to reinforce positions of the 708th Infantry Division, the third battalion was subordinated to Panzer Lehr and posted to Aaron, west of ville Mayenne. (The primary movement bridge of the American thrust over the Mayenne captured by Pattons troops on the 5th of August)
