French WW2 painting guide

1940 French Painting guide Uniform and Equipment 

I have a few pieces laying around on my painting desk that have been there for some time. One of those are some Battlefield Blitz artillery crew and Simons Soldiers 1940 French command sets. It has been some time since I painted French so I decided to have a look around and see what the latest ideas were …. Sadly some poor YouTube guides as most of them in light khaki, most obviously have never seen a French 1935 ww2 uniform in the flesh as they are way to light, so last night I sat down and decided to put together a good match list from my paint collection, mostly Vallejo but some AK interactive paint options also.

The French were going through a modernization program when the war commenced so some pieces of webbing, cartridge pouches and weapons were very different and of ww1 pattern. However not a lot of difference at 20mm scale really except the webbing.   I will name the pieces of uniform in French and English, plus post some pictures for explanation. 

One of the best references for French 1940 uniform is these two books, a must for any wargamer!

In the majority the coat was khaki green, however some WW1 light blue were issued to reservists and the mobile reserve wore dark blue

Chassuer Ardennais Rifle battalion

 Chassuers Ardennais 1st Battalion 

Completed four companies of FAA and Blitz/Battlefield miniatures for my First Chassuer Ardennais regiment. These chaps have been awaiting completion since the end of March and as I am going through a completion and clearing of my desk I thought I should get them done 100% including company markings. Really happy with the results. I still have another battalion to build, however I hope to use FAA for them too, but with the tariffs all over the place. I will need to continue my search online I think.

French 75mm artillery

 French 75mm artillery 

Completed another 75mm French artillery piece, 3d resin gun with battlefield/ blitz crew, painted with the new AK French uniform colour which I really like, it looks really green in the photo but it is more khaki, but not as light as English uniform. Planning on painting my Simons soldiers French in the coming weeks.

Belgian Artillery - Krupp 105 mm modèle 1898/190

Belgian Artillery Battery 

The Belgian infantry division had a support regiment of two medium battery’s  of 10 guns, they were predominantly light and medium guns of German or French origin. The German Krupp models were in the majority, ammunition though was in short supply. The 12th Regiment supported the 1st division of the Chasseur Ardennais.

Painting has moved at a snail pace this week as I have been renovating on the top floor again, laying tiles in a new bathroom and painting 1/1 scale. I did manage to get these done though yesterday though. Infantry battalion and chasseur battalion not far behind. Really happy with the resin Retrotracks 1/72 T13 kits . I do need to source crew from EWM or perhaps foundry French crew for the T13s again they have hand painted markings,. The Vickers is a FAA model  as is the crewman.
